How to Fish Hunger, Cooking & Heals

Eat Clams on Island 1. Unlock the grill on Island 3. Lava is the late-game microwave.

Hunger & Healing Guide

How to Fish will starve you and then ask you to stand in a poison cloud. Healing is food, not a medkit shop. You eat creatures — raw in a panic, cooked when you know the island. This page is hunger, Clams, the Island 3 grill, lava cooks, and the achievements that punish greed, through Patch 1.0.10.

If Pufferfish keeps deleting you, you probably skipped Grillmaster. If the whale fight is a wipe, you are fighting hungry on military sand. Difficulty from 1.0.9 changes how hard creatures hit; it does not add bandages.

Island 1: Clams

Clams are ground pickups on the Lighthouse sand. Eat one when the stomach is empty. Feed extras to the keeper for cash. They are special creatures in the 54-entry catalog, not a Ham pool fish. You can keep grabbing them after the tutorial. They are the heal until Forest guns start dropping real meat. Lighthouse.

Raw catches also fill hunger. Do not eat the Empty Beer Can, the Shell, or anything the keeper still wants.

Island 3: grill

Blue Shark (Standard Boss Lure) plus the Grillmaster NPC unlocks the lighter. That is Grillmaster. Hold a creature over the grill and watch the multiplier on the F info tab. Pull around 1.5×. Stay longer and it burns: value collapses, and eating the charcoal is Yummy in my tummy. Competitive eating is a mini-boss corpse — a different row.

Cooked fish is the Pufferfish heal. Patch 1.0.4 nerfed the boss; the poison trail still wants food in the pocket. Patch 1.0.10: dip weapons and tools in water to clean cooking residue so you are not waving a breaded sniper. Full shop talk: Cooking and Desert Island.

Ground stashes (64 items) let you leave a cook pile at camp and find it after a quit if the pile was prioritized. Do not stash the Carrot.

Island 5: lava

Volcano cooking is faster, about the same 1.5× idea, without the grill timing window. Use it to stock heals before Mutated Bowhead Whale. Do not throw random pets in the crater — the scientist’s whale is the one lava story step. Volcano Island.

Combat extras

Co-op revive is a slap in the face, not a food mechanic. As long as one player is up, they can pick you up. Eat after the slap. Seagulls steal food piles on land; shoot them. Beer is not a heal; 1.0.10 only stopped beer from bleeding when punched.

Easy mode cuts creature damage 50%, which is the cheapest “heal” on Bean. Hard mode does the opposite. Difficulty.

What not to eat, and when to eat

Do not eat Empty Beer Can, Spider Crab Shell, Giant Piranha Skeleton, Carrot, Pufferfish trophy, Albatross Head, Fish Bucket, or Whale Fin. Those are Radar pieces. Do not eat Bing Bong if you still need the encyclopedia tick — kill first, then cook or sell. Competitive eating wants a mini-boss corpse, not a clam.

Eat before you start Pufferfish, not after the poison cloud is already on you. Eat on the military flats before the mutated whale, not during the slap-revive circus. In co-op, one cooked pile on the grill is not eight stomachs: cook extras or call who is holding the last steak.

Beer is a quest reagent. Punching it no longer bleeds after 1.0.10, but it still is not a sandwich. Hunger will not wait for a shop that never sold bandages.
