How to Fish — Bean (Sub-Hour Clear)
A dedicated save. Easy mode is allowed. The volcano skip is not.
Bean is the Steam achievement for finishing How to Fish within one hour. It is one of 28 achievements and one of two that want a purpose-built run — the other is Handyman. A normal first playthrough spends hours on Drip farming, roulette, and the grill. Bean does not. Start a fresh save, talk to every island NPC, hand in the story trophy, and leave.
Patch 1.0.5 removed travel to locked islands. Old clips that sail from the Lighthouse to the Volcano are dead. The clock follows the same chain as the Walkthrough: Spider Crab → Giant Piranha → Pufferfish → Albatross → Mutated Bowhead Whale → Fin hand-in → mainland. Easy mode from Patch 1.0.9 is the right slider. Creatures have 25 percent less health and deal 50 percent less damage. Steam does not document Easy as locking achievements.
What you skip on purpose
Do not grind Collector or Fishipedia. Do not spin the Reel of Fortune unless a Drip is already in your hands and the cabinet is on the way. Do not play roulette for All in. Do not farm I’m the bird now on this save unless the dynamite is already bought and the boat is in the water — it is a 20-second detour, not a requirement for Bean.
Sell ordinary meat. Keep every distinctive trophy. Patch 1.0.10 saves ground piles up to 64 items, but a speedrun still wants trophies in inventory. A sold Skeleton is a second Piranha fight you cannot afford.
Island 1 — Lighthouse
Feed clams. Buy the Crab Fishing Rod, then Brass Knuckles or the Knife. Buy Beer, give the full can to the Lighthouse Keeper, keep the Empty Beer Can. Spawn and kill the Spider Crab. Hand the Shell in for Boat Keys. Buy the Radar for $10 before you sail. The $10 is not optional; without it the next rock does not appear on the screen.
Do not sit on the lighthouse to print coins. Forest shops have the shotgun you actually want.
Island 2 — Forest
Buy a gun when you can. The Shotgun is the usual pick. Buy the cheap engine (~$230) only if the boat is painfully slow — Getting an upgrade is not required for Bean. The lady by the lake wants three Leeches. They are small ground pickups around vegetation and paths, not fish. Convert them into Modified Leech bait, spawn the Giant Piranha, keep the Skeleton, hand it in. That write is Island 3, not the kill itself.
Island 3 — Desert
Talk to the Tourist. An endangered catch (Needlefish, Bowl Fish, or Seahorse) pays the Carrot. Carrot baits the Pufferfish. Keep the trophy remnant, hand it in, take Island 4 coordinates. Skip the grill if you are healthy. If you are not, the Blue Shark on Standard Boss Lure starts cooking and is worth one extra fight on Easy.
Island 4 — Rocks
Buy Professional Boss Lure (~$1,200), catch Tuna, use the Tuna body as Albatross bait. Kill the bird from cover with a scoped rifle if you have one. Keep the head. Hand it in. The $860 engine (I am speed) is a comfort buy, not a Bean gate. Skip it if the bankroll is the lure.
Island 5 — Volcano
Buy Scientific Lure if the scientist needs five local creatures. Get the Fish Bucket, catch the regular Bowhead Whale, carry the whole body up the planks, throw it in the crater. That spawn is the Mutated Bowhead Whale. Kill it, keep the Fin, finish the military objective, take the route home. We are so back and Bean should pop together if the hour is still green.
Co-op shortens fights if everyone knows not to sell trophies. Host on Easy. Private invite lobbies (Patch 1.0.5) keep randoms from ending the run. Mixed patches refuse lobbies — everyone needs 1.0.10 or newer.
If the hour fails, the usual leaks are a missing Leech search, a sold trophy, or a boss that never spawned because the bait was still in the shop. Read Boss Fights for stun windows, then try again on a clean save.
