How to Fish Easy, Normal & Hard Difficulty
Patch 1.0.9 added selectable combat tuning without changing baits or island order.
Patch 1.0.9 (August 24, 2026) is the first How to Fish update that lets you pick a combat difficulty. Dazed Games added Easy and Hard beside the original tuning, which is now labeled as the default / Normal experience. You can change the setting from the main menu and in-game, including when you create a lobby. Restart Steam if the selector is missing — an older build will not show it.
The percentages below come from the official Steam announcement. They apply to all creatures: ordinary fish, mini-bosses, and story bosses. The patch does not list per-boss exceptions, and it does not change documented baits, trophies, or the five-island order locked in by Patch 1.0.5.
What each mode does
| Mode | Creature health | Creature damage | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Easy | 25% less | 50% less | First clears, kids, or learning tells |
| Normal (default) | Unchanged from pre-1.0.9 | Unchanged | The launch balance |
| Hard | 25% more | 25% more | Repeat runs that felt too short |
Easy is the bigger swing. Halving incoming damage makes Spider Crab charges and Pufferfish rolls far more forgiving, while the 25% health cut shortens every fight. Hard stretches the same patterns: more shots into the stun window, more cooked fish on the ground, more respect for the Mutated Bowhead Whale slam.
Normal is not a nerf or a buff relative to launch week. If you created a save before 1.0.9 and never touch the menu, you are still on that original curve.
How to change difficulty
- Update How to Fish and fully restart Steam so Patch 1.0.9 or later is actually installed.
- Open the difficulty option from the main menu, or change it in-game when you create a lobby.
- Confirm Easy, Normal, or Hard before you spend a unique bait such as the Empty Beer Can, Carrot, or Fish Bucket.
- In co-op, say the mode out loud. The official note does not spell out host-versus-client ownership, so align the lobby before a story boss.
- If Steam Relay text in the main menu turns red, the same 1.0.9 patch added a connection debug. Check the Community Discord #common-bugs channel rather than blaming difficulty.
What difficulty does not change
Island unlocks still require the correct trophy in an NPC’s hands. Easy mode will not let you skip the Forest leeches or the Desert tourist. Hard mode will not spawn extra bosses. Shop prices, lure tiers, Reel of Fortune skin tables, and achievement wording are not rewritten in the 1.0.9 notes.
Healing still comes from eating catches and cooked fish. Easy simply means you eat less often. Ground stashes from Patch 1.0.10 (up to 64 saved world items) are useful on Hard, where you want a pile of lava-cooked fish near the military camp before the whale sequence.
Boss planning by mode
On Easy, the Lighthouse Knife-plus-stun plan is enough for Spider Crab, and you can attempt Giant Piranha with a modest shotgun and a small cook pile. Use Easy if you are learning the white escape bar and charge tells described in the Boss Fights Guide.
On Normal, follow the Walkthrough gear beats: melee for the crab, a real gun for the piranha, positioning for the puffer, Professional Boss Lure for Tuna, Assault Rifle attachments for the lava whale.
On Hard, treat every committed attack as lethal. Stock more cooked fish than you think you need, finish the Blue Shark / grill loop before Pufferfish, and do not start Mutated Bowhead Whale until the rifle is fully kitted. Co-op helps because teammates can revive and split aggro; Patch 1.0.4 already allows lobbies larger than four if your group wants extra guns.
Achievements and uncertainty
The official 1.0.9 post does not say that Easy disables Steam achievements, and it does not promise that every unlock is unaffected. Until Dazed Games publishes a rule, do not treat either outcome as confirmed. If a specific unlock matters — Bean, Handyman, Fishipedia — meet the in-game condition exactly and note which difficulty was selected if you file a bug.
Bean still requires finishing within one hour on the post-1.0.5 island lock. Easy can help the combat minutes; it does not restore the old volcano skip. Handyman is still a last-hit rule on the Mutated Bowhead Whale, described in the Achievements Guide.
