How to Fish Lures, Bait & Quest Hooks
Shop tiers fill the encyclopedia. Story bosses want items the shop does not sell.
How to Fish has two bait families that players mix up. Shop lures unlock an island’s normal pool and, at the Boss Lure tier, optional mini-bosses. Quest baits start story fights and they are unique items: Empty Beer Can, Modified Leech, Carrot, dead Tuna, Fish Bucket, then a whale carcass. A bigger gun never substitutes for the wrong hook. This page is the bait map through Patch 1.0.10.

Everyday shop tiers
| Island | Everyday bait | Typical cost | What it catches |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lighthouse | Ham, Hot Dog | Cheap / ~$1 | Crabs, shrimp, lobster |
| Forest | French Fry, Beginner Lure | Fry cheap; lure ~$3 | Forest fish encyclopedia |
| Desert | Standard Lure | ~$15 | Desert pool, endangered labels |
| Rocks | Professional Lure | ~$50 | Rocks pool |
| Volcano | Scientific Lure | ~$500 | Volcano pool, Anglerfish included |
There is no universal “rare lure.” Drip variants use the same everyday bait as the normal form on the same island. Watch for rainbow names. Coconut is not a Drip lure; it is Bing Bong only.
Boss Lures from shops
| Lure | Island | About | Spawns |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beginner Boss Lure | Forest | ~$40 | Sunfish, Old Pike |
| Standard Boss Lure | Desert | ~$280 | Blue Shark (grill) |
| Professional Boss Lure | Rocks | ~$1,200 | Tuna |
| Scientific Boss Lure | Volcano | ~$5,800 | Goblin Shark |
Tuna is a mini-boss that then becomes Albatross bait. Blue Shark is the grill key, not the Pufferfish key. Goblin Shark is Collector optional. None of these replace Empty Beer Can, Modified Leech, Carrot, or Fish Bucket.
Quest baits you cannot buy as lures
- Empty Beer Can — full Beer to the Lighthouse Keeper, then the empty can on the rod. Lighthouse.
- Modified Leech — three ground Leeches to the Forest lady. Forest Island.
- Carrot — endangered catch to the Tourist. Desert Island.
- Coconut (~$350) — interactable tree, Desert center. Bing Bong.
- Tuna body — not a shop lure; the corpse on the sand. Rocks Island.
- Fish Bucket — five volcano-native fish to the scientist. Volcano Island.
- Bowhead carcass — thrown into lava, not cast as a lure.
If a boss will not spawn, check this list before buying another attachment. Difficulty from 1.0.9 changes health, not bait. Ground items save up to 64 objects after 1.0.10, but a unique can or Carrot still belongs in inventory while you sail.
Common bait mistakes
Players burn Professional Lure on Lighthouse water. That pool still wants Ham and Hot Dog. Players buy Scientific Boss Lure “for the whale” and then stand on military sand with an empty bucket. The whale wants five volcano-native fish, not a Goblin Shark. Coconut is not a Tourist payment and not a Drip farm.
Co-op: say the unique bait out loud. Eight people can each buy a Coconut; only one Empty Beer Can exists per keeper animation. If the host already handed the can, clients should not farm a second crab for keys the lobby already shares. Shop labels follow the island you are standing on. Sailing back to Forest with a Standard Lure still equipped still catches Forest fish — the lure is inventory, not a biome aura. The expensive Volcano lure does not upgrade Forest mackerel into Drip.
